Daniel “Dan” Farber has functioned as president and chief executive officer of Bright Lights USA since founding the Barrington, New Jersey, mechanical and electro-mechanical parts manufacturer in 1990. When he is not leading activities at Bright Lights, Dan Farber supports a number of philanthropic organizations, including the American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross provides a wide range of philanthropic services around the world. However, the organization is perhaps best known for its blood donation efforts. Individuals interested in donating blood must first meet a number of eligibility standards. First and foremost, a potential donor must be in good health and feeling well on the day of a donation. Even if a person comes down with a simple cold, the American Red Cross advises they call their local donation center and reschedule their appointment.
The American Red Cross also maintains age requirements. Donations are generally only accepted from individuals ages 17 and older, though 16-year olds accompanied by a legal guardian can contribute in some states. Additional requirements involve a person’s body type. Donations from individuals under 110 pounds, for example, are generally not accepted. High school students and individuals under the age of 18 may be subjected to further weight requirements.
Finally, donors who meet all standards of eligibility must make donations according to the American Red Cross timetable. For instance, whole blood donations can only be made once every 56 days. Platelets donations can be made more frequently, once per week, but only 24 times per year. Power red donations, meanwhile, can be made three times per year and must be spaced out by at least 112 days.
